Why trust any of these apps at all?
Hidden cameras in short-term rentals stopped being an urban legend a long time ago. How do hidden camera detector apps actually work?

Are free hidden camera detector apps reliable?
Within limits, yes — if you understand what those limits are. A network scanner is only as good as its device-signature database, IR detection needs a dark room and a slow sweep, and magnetometer readings spike near any electronics, not just cameras, so you have to investigate what you find. Treat any single "clean" result as one data point, not a verdict. That's precisely why multi-method scanning matters: the methods fail in different ways, so stacking them shrinks the blind spots.
The realistic alternative isn't a better app — it's dedicated RF-detection hardware, which sweeps radio frequencies apps can't access. Hardware detectors cost anywhere from $20 to several hundred dollars and require some skill to interpret. For most travelers, a multi-method app is the right first line, with hardware as an upgrade for high-stakes situations.
How to run a quick room sweep
- Join the room's Wi-Fi and run a network scan. Investigate anything flagged as a camera, and check unknown devices' vendors and open ports.
- Kill the lights and do an IR sweep. Move slowly across smoke detectors, alarm clocks, vents, shelves, and anything with a "convenient" view of the bed or bathroom.
- Finish with a magnetometer pass over the same suspect spots, watching for spikes where no electronics should be.
